Vaping toolkit overview
An overview of evidence-informed approaches to vaping prevention, to help reduce vaping harms in young people in your community
Community-based approaches to vaping prevention
Effective community-based approaches to vaping prevention involve interventions, programs, or messaging that are based on evidence of effectiveness and are designed and delivered by communities to prevent youth vaping
As vaping prevention efforts are relatively new, there is limited evidence of thoroughly evaluated, effective community-based prevention programs or interventions. However, there are multiple opportunities for communities to prevent or reduce young people vaping. These include:
- improving parents’ knowledge and confidence to talk with their children about vaping through educational workshops and sharing of key resources (e.g. Talk About It)
- increasing parents’ awareness of ways they can decrease the risk of their children vaping through educational workshops and information sessions
- using educational campaigns (e.g. UNCLOUD) to improve young people’s knowledge of the chemicals included in vapes and the risks and impacts of vaping, including the health effects.
Community-based approaches do not include activities delivered in school settings. For school-based vaping interventions, LDATs can:
- use the Alcohol and Other Drug Education in Schools toolkit as a guide to a school-based approach
- encourage schools to register for the OurFutures vaping prevention program.
